Irrigation Nutrient Recycling is the inclusion of nutrients in groundwater / drain irrigation water in on-farm decision-making. The opportunity for making better use of irrigation water nutrients across the Hekeao/Hinds Plains was identified in a 2020 research article.
In response, we have worked with Agribusiness consultants to develop case studies for pasture and mixed cropping situations. In addition to lowering groundwater nutrient concentrations without new water or consents, the amount and cost of external fertiliser is also decreased.
