Wetlands and bioreactors convert nitrate to nitrogen gas via biological processes. This conversion releases the nitrogen gas into the atmosphere, reducing nitrate levels in the water. Natural wetlands historically covered parts of the lower Hekeao/ Hinds Plains as well as areas around the Hekeao Hinds River.

Constructed wetlands provide improved nitrate conversion rates over natural wetlands due to their tailored design. Bioreactors also provide high nitrate conversion rates using an even smaller land footprint.

We are involved in constructed wetland trials in the lower Hekeao/Hinds Plains as well as a trial of the eClean bioreactor.
